APPOINTMENTS GENERAL

We think our patients should have an unhurried consultation. Nurses perform a wide variety of tasks from simple blood pressure monitoring to complicated dressings and assisting the doctors. Their clinics are scheduled as 10 minute slots but obviously some things will require longer. Please inform the receptionist of the procedure that you require so she can book the appropriate length of appointment. Sometimes the nurse will tell you what length of appointment to book. If there is not enough time allocated you may have to rebook.

IMMUNISATIONS

Please inform the receptionist what immunisation is required. The Nurse will need time to explain the procedure and discuss the possible side effects and benefits. Baby imms require 20 minutes. Single jabs e.g. diphtheria and tetanus booster only 10mins.

CERVICAL SMEARS

Some find this an unpleasant procedure (I can't image it is nice - Dr M). To help you relax we book a 20 minute appointment. Please ensure that you are in between periods and do not have a bath or intercourse before the test. This is now performed with a warm disposable plastic speculum and the sample is taken with a brush (it was a wooden spatula) which must be less uncomfortable.

PILL CHECKS

If you are happy with your pill please book a normal 10 minute slot with the nurse. If you would like to start the pill or have problems please see a GP. Nurse Sue Millroy can advise you on contraception in general and perform IUCD checks.

DRESSINGS

These range from a simple adhesive wound covering to specialised leg ulcer compression dressings. The receptionist will often have to ask the nurse how long the dressing will need and may have to ring you back. Please be understanding in this case. If you are being brought by someone to the surgery please advise them that you may be a long time.

REMOVAL OF SUTURES

If you have had an operation either at the surgery or in hospital you may require removal of sutures or clips. Our nurses are happy to remove these. you will normally be advised on how long after surgery to have them removed. If in doubt please telephone the nurse for advice.

OTHERS

Examples of longer appointments include: ECG, IUD, ear wax wash-out, leg artery doppler, asthma check, 24hr BP monitor and smoking cessation.
